# Free shutter count checker in your browser

> Source: https://caminfolab.nl/
> Read your camera’s shutter count for free in Chrome or Edge. Connect the camera over USB and see the number it reports, with the time of the reading. No install, no account, and readings stay on your computer.

## How it works

1. **Connect the camera with a USB data cable** and switch it on.
2. **Select Connect camera and choose it** in your browser’s USB chooser. Only the device you pick is shared with this page.
3. **Read the number.** The page asks the camera for its shutter counter and shows exactly what it reports, with the time of the reading and where the value came from.

The camera driver is the open-source [libgphoto2](https://github.com/gphoto/libgphoto2) library compiled to WebAssembly. It runs inside the browser tab. Nothing about your camera is sent to us unless you choose to share a result.

## What you need

- **Chrome or Microsoft Edge on a computer.** WebUSB is not available in Firefox, Safari, or on iPhone and iPad.
- **A USB cable that carries data,** plugged directly into the computer if possible.
- **No other app using the camera.** Quit Photos, Image Capture, EOS Utility, Lightroom and automatic photo importers first.
- **macOS** is reported to work without extra setup. **Windows** usually needs the camera’s driver replaced before any browser can reach it, and **Linux** may need USB permissions. We are still verifying each platform; see the [FAQ](https://caminfolab.nl/faq#windows).

## What the reading means

- It is the number **the camera reports**. We never estimate, round or fill in a value. A real count of 0 is shown as 0; a missing counter is reported as missing.
- The time shown is when **this reading was taken**, not when the camera last updated its counter. Some cameras, including the Canon EOS 60D we test with, only refresh the counter when switched on. See [why a count may not change](https://caminfolab.nl/guides/shutter-count-not-changing).
- Not every camera reports a shutter count over USB. Check [which cameras have been tested](https://caminfolab.nl/supported-cameras).
- A shutter count is not a health check. Read [what it does and doesn’t tell you](https://caminfolab.nl/guides/what-shutter-count-tells-you).

## Privacy

The connection, the reading and the result stay on your computer. The page never uploads photos, serial numbers or shutter counts. If you choose, you can tap **Share result** to send the camera model, firmware and whether it worked, to help grow the camera list. See the [privacy notice](https://caminfolab.nl/privacy).
