Privacy
Short version: the camera connection and every reading stay in your browser. We don’t have accounts, cookies or trackers, and we never receive your shutter count, camera serial number or photos. If you choose to tap Share result, we receive the camera model, firmware and whether it worked, and nothing about you.
What happens when you use the shutter count checker
- Your browser asks you to choose a USB device. The page can only talk to the device you choose, and only while the tab is open.
- The camera driver (libgphoto2, compiled to WebAssembly) is downloaded from this site and runs inside your browser tab. It reads the camera’s shutter counter and its status information: model, firmware, battery level, lens, shots left on the card, clock and similar details.
- The result is shown on the page and kept only in that tab. Closing the tab clears it. If you copy the result, it goes to your clipboard, nowhere else.
- Serial numbers stay hidden until you select Show, and are never included in the copied result or the technical details.
We don’t send any of this to a server unless you choose to share a result (below). There is no server-side code involved in talking to your camera.
If you choose to share a result
After a reading, or when a camera won’t connect, you can tap Share result (or Share report) to help grow the list of cameras that work. Nothing is sent until you tap, and you can open See exactly what’s sent first.
A shared result contains only:
- camera make, model and firmware version, and its USB vendor and product IDs (these identify a camera model, not your camera);
- the outcome: count read, no counter, an unexpected value, or the type of connection problem;
- which property held the counter, your browser name and major version, your operating system family, and the version of our camera driver.
We store it with the date (not the time). We never receive or store your shutter count, serial numbers, owner name, photos, your IP address or any identifier for you or your device. Shared results are stored in a Cloudflare D1 database and summarised as counts per camera model on the tested cameras page, where models show as “user tested”. We remove spam. Shared results are never sold or used for advertising.
To stop spam, Cloudflare briefly counts how many reports come from each network address. That count lives only in memory at the edge for about a minute and is never stored by us.
What our host sees
The site is served by Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes standard request information, such as your IP address, browser type and the pages requested, to deliver the site and protect it from abuse. We don’t add analytics or advertising scripts to the camera tool.
If we add privacy-friendly, aggregate visit statistics in the future, they will not include shutter counts, serial numbers, photos or anything that identifies you, and we’ll update this page first.
Feedback and camera reports
If you send feedback or a camera report through GitHub, it is public on GitHub and covered by GitHub’s privacy policy. Please don’t include your camera’s serial number or other personal details.
Changes
